How the Created Thing
How the Created Thing
Can Lead You to the Creator:
History for the Living Child
By: Mary E. Woodis
Background Passage: John 1:1-5
John 1:3, “All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made.” KJV
“He created everything there is. Nothing exists that he didn't make.” NLT
“In the beginning was the Word…” Word in Greek is logos, which would be Jesus Christ in the form of our Creator. Anyone with a smattering of biblical knowledge can tell you this. But does that really mean that all things were created by Him? Does that apply to today? How can the created thing lead us back to our Creator? These are the questions that I hope to answer for you today. I want to show you how to teach history to a living child.
I checked the Greek lexicon for the word logos because I wanted to make sure that I was right in my usage of this word. This is what I found:
Logos in John, denotes the essential Word of God, Jesus Christ, the personal wisdom and power in union with God, His minister in creation and government of the universe... ¹
I also found some very interesting history of this word. Look at this:
A Greek philosopher named Heraclitus first used the term Logos around 600 B.C. to designate the divine reason or plan, which coordinates a changing universe. ¹
So, yes, our Creator was in fact Jesus and a quick check of the Greek lexicon for the words all things reveals to us that the word does include everything.
each, every, any, all, the whole, everyone, all things, everything ²
That means each and everything in your home and the world around you was created by Christ Jesus for the use of His children. But why did He create all this? How does this work out in our lives? Let me show you another verse:
Romans 1:20, “From the time the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky and all that God made. They can clearly see His invisible qualities--His eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse whatsoever for not knowing God.” NLT
God, in His infinite power and wisdom, reveals Himself to us through all of His creation. His purpose for creation was for us to know Him. Every time we look at the world around us, we see Him. That is love in action; a loving Father revealing Himself to us so that we could know Him. I stand amazed that He would do that for us, the most rebellious and sinful creatures of all His creation. It leads me to ask:
1 John 3:1 “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God...”
All of history can be traced back to that first moment of creation when God said, “Let there be light...” Gen. 1:3 In that moment History began. Therefore, history should be taught by a person who is passionate about the subject. People like Mr. Pettus of Pettus Museum or your children's grandfather who lived through the war you are studying. These people know their subject intimately and can tell your children what it was really like. History should come alive for your child as you teach it. Sometimes I view it like this: the entire timeline of human existence is laid out before God. He can view every moment of it at the same time. He is active in every moment of it at the same time. If we teach our children from this viewpoint, then they will always be able to see God's fingerprints in history.

A timeline is most useful for an overview of history. It helps your child see what was happening all over the world at the same time. Terri Johnson of Knowledge Quest http://www.knowledgequestmaps.com has created one of the best timeline books I have ever seen. Be sure you check out her resources and tell her that Mary Woodis sent you. When you create a timeline, be sure you add art and science along with your history. It gives your child a well-rounded view of the world. You can even include the dates that selected pieces of literature where written to help them see the timeframe of a treasured volume. Timeline figures can help your children visualize what things looked like during that time. We enjoy our timelines.
Another way to teach living history to your living child is by giving them books to read that will engage their minds. For Christmas, we gave our son a copy of, “Ferninand Magellan - Master Mariner” by: Seymour Gates Pond. This book has captured the imagination of our son. Last night he came to ask me what a cape was. I sent him to the dictionary believing that if he found the word himself, he would own it. Later, he came back to me and told what capes are and how they were surrounded by lush, green hills in his book. My son is nine. Would you expect this vocabulary from a nine-year old?
If I had handed my son a history textbook and he read about Ferdinand Magellan, we wouldn't have had that conversation. History textbooks present facts and bare descriptions. There is no storyline to capture your child's imagination and no tracing of our Father's fingerprints. You get just the facts, ma'am. Is it any wonder that history fails to stir the imagination of children?
Last year for Mother's Day, Jessie and I hiked into West Bee Branch Canyon. In the midst of this canyon stands Big Tree. I had long heard the stories of Big Tree, but had never stood at the base of it. When we reached the tree, I got a sense of being in the presence of history. This tree has been firmly rooted in this spot for more than two hundred years, most likely longer. My mind immediately began to scroll back over the history that I know happened in this area. Next it jumped to a plan to bring my children here as a finish to local Alabama history. This tree is living history!
Many places throughout the southeast are registered historical sites. The Shoals area is filled with Civil War, American Indian and early pioneer history. Driving down streets of the area will usually reveal historical markers. Have you ever taken the time to stop and read one of those signs? Angela Broyles has written an Alabama History curriculum that simply cannot be beat. This author is passionate about her subject. In conclusion I would like to remind you once again of the Source of all history, Jesus Christ. God made all things to reveal Himself to us. Through God's perfect will, He created mankind and placed Him in the Garden of Eden. Through His permissive will, man sinned. Throughout history, God has provided for men every breath and need. In the beginning of your Homeschool adventure, God provided curriculum that would give you security. As your adventure continued, God provided you with further options that allowed you to express your creativity.
Through each phase of our adventure, God has led us. In the beginning, we learned to walk with baby steps. As we grew and matured, our steps lengthened as we learned to follow Him with more confidence. For our history this year, God supplied “Grandfather's Chair” by Nathaniel Hawthorne. This book turned out to be a tremendous overview of American History. Another time, God provided us with “100 Missionary Stories that Every Boy and Girl Should Read.” This was an awesome overview of world history. I wonder what He will provide next. I'll be sure to let you know!
