Welcome back teachers and friends!
The school year is just in its infancy stages. We all are attempting to work out a new schedule. This is the time of year that trial and error seems to be the code word for homeschooling. For some, you are still in the honeymoon stage. This is your first year and you love it. For others, it is simply picking up the books and beginning where you left off. I am doing something that I haven't done since 1998; I am only schooling two children this year. Wow! What an incredible change from last year.
As we face this new school year and struggle to find a new normal I wanted to share with you a few words of comfort and assurance.
You are never alone in this adventure! Because you are a part of this support group, you have at your fingertips all of the help and support you need. If we don't know the answer to your question, we will help you find it. Also, scripture tells us that God will never leave you along. Joshua 1:9, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” And in Hebrews 4:16 we are reminded, “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
You have a Comforter when things go wrong. John 14:16, “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever.” It doesn't matter how perfect your lesson plans are, or how perfect your schedule was, or how good and interesting you can teach, things will go wrong and the enemy will try to discourage you. When this happens run to your Comforter. Turn your thoughts inward and upward, tell your Father all about it. He already had a solution for you before the problem arose. Ask Him what you should do, trust Him to know what is best; obey Him when He gives you direction.
There is nothing new under the sun. Someone else has already been through a problem very similar to what you are facing. That is why this support group is so important to your success. We want to come along side of you and listen when you need to vent, offer a shoulder when you need to cry, and to celebrate your successes with you. Many of us have schooled from preschool through high school. If we haven't seen it all, we have at least seen a version of it. Therefore, we shall do as scripture has prescribed and “Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2
Everyday is a new chance for success. Lamentations 3:22-23 tells us, “Through the LORD'S mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not, they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness, `The LORD is my portion,' says my soul, `therefore I hope in Him!'” Yesterday only matters in record keeping, today is a new start.
You don't have to teach it all every day. Set yourself a schedule that will be easy to accomplish and add in extras as time allows. History and Science don't have to be taught every day. Remember what our Lord taught us in Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Don't allow school to become a burden, make it fun!
The best teachers are students. Never stop educating yourself. Learn with your child and from your Lord. There is a four step process that is used in the Boy Scouts that would also work well in homeschooling.
Read it. Reach through the subject matter first.
Be taught it. Let the author teach you their subject. Choose passionate teachers.
Experience it. Only by experiencing a lesson can you see best how to teach it.
Teach it. The best way to learn a thing is to teach it.
Alright, now you are ready for your new school year. Keep this in your journal for those tough days. I pray this will be an encouragement to you in the days ahead.
Lovingly,
Mary ©
