The Water and the Blood
The Water and the Blood:
What’s Flowing in Your Homeschool?
By: Mary E. Woodis
Background passage:
Leviticus 14:33-53 (NIV)
Fifteen years ago Jessie and I purchased a beautiful piece of land in northwest Lauderdale County of Alabama. We loved this piece of property because of the woods. The woods help to keep the land moist and cool and provided shelter from the storms in the winter. We determined that one day we would build a home on this property.
God Honor's Our Desire
After three years God honored our desire and provided provisions for us to build a cement block basement home that is open on two sides. On these two sides we placed lots of windows because these are the sides that face the woods. These windows helped to bring light into our home and dispel the darkness and closed in feeling.
The Battle with Mold
Over the years we have had a continual battle with moisture and mildew. The mildew grows on the walls and on the windows. It is a constant source of sickness and it is very unsightly too! It stains anything that it comes in contact with and has ruined many garments that were left lying against the walls in the laundry room. The mold grows in dark places where condensation forms on the walls from the temperature difference between the inside and the outside.
The Gift of Wisdom
God has granted us wisdom in dealing with this problem as we have lived in this home. We placed a dehumidifier in the most underground room. In order to clean the walls we used a combination of bleach and water and then painted the walls with a special paint that kills the mildew and seals the walls against the moisture that feeds it. Over the top of this sealer paint we used another paint that is specially formulated for basements, bathrooms
and children’s rooms. You can clean the walls when they are painted with this paint!
Slowly, but surely, we have stripped out the walls and placed insulation on them and covered the block walls. This has brought beauty back into our home and stopped a lot of the sickness. The insulation sealing the blocks has made our home warmer also. We found to our dismay that blocks act as conductors. If it is cold outside, the blocks transport that cold to the inside. If it is hot outside, they transfer the heat to the inside.
In the Beginning God Created Water
Water was the first thing that God placed on this earth when He created it. All life and dry land proceeded forth from the water; the life was in the water. The waters were separated and there is water above and water below the surface of the land. A full 3/5 of our planet is covered by water. By God’s divine decree the first thing He called forth over this watery planet was light.
Water is also a great conductor, electricity can flow through it, boats glide right along on it and most living creatures derive life from it. Life can be sustained for a good long time without food, but without water? Just a couple of days and you are gone!
The Need for Living Water
We all have a need for water, this much is apparent, but we all have a need for spiritual water as well. This is the Living Water that flows from the throne of God. (Revelation 22:1-2). Jesus told us that if we believe in Him we would have this Living Water flowing
from us! (John 7:38) Through this Living Water God conducts His power to us so that we may find the answers that we need and the power to remove sin (mildew) from our lives.
The Need for Light
It is the same with us today! Unless there is enough Light to shine in our lives, mildew will begin to take over those dark, secret places. This mildew grows and spreads and if left untreated will soon rot and destroy our home. It is so destructive! We learned very early on
that mildew cannot live were moisture problems are taken care of and there is plenty of Light.
Just like that mildew we cannot prosper in our fight against Satan if we do not have enough Light in our life. We keep this Light in our lives by daily partaking of Scripture and daily meeting our Dear Father God in prayer. Without this contact the door to our heart begins to swing shut and block out the Light.
Children Need the Light
We must make sure that this Light is being shed into the life of our children as well. Just as our daily personal Bible study is important, we must make sure that your children are partaking of this opportunity as well. Our older children have a time set aside for daily Bible reading and copy work. This is so important! Please use this tool in your home to keep the mildew off the walls of your children's hearts!
Biblical Instruction for Mildew
In Leviticus 14 God gave very special instructions to the Israelites on how to handle this problem.
You see, as soon as we discover this growth in our home we must take our problem to our High Priest. We cannot surprise Him nor will we ever find Him too busy to deal with our problems. His grace is sufficient for our needs! (2 Corinthians 12:9)
The Plague of Sin
In every home from time to time there comes a plague or a growth of sin. Sometimes it is a sin of rebellion, sometimes it is a lie, and sometimes it is a spirit of discontent or bitterness. In all cases, this growth must be handled properly or it will grow and spread and
destroy our homes.
The Process of Cleansing
1. The first thing that that priest ordered was that the house must be emptied. (Lev. 14:36) So we can take this as an example. When we find sin (mildew) in our home and we go before our High Priest. When we go, let’s go with an uncluttered mind and heart. Let’s empty ourselves of the distractions of the home and day, and truly focus on the problem at hand, the sin (mildew).
2. Once the house was emptied and the priest had examined it and found mildew, he closed the home for seven days. We have often found that when bickering, bitterness and resentment fill our home, a very effective solution is to just stay home, cancel all activities and heal the problems. It is a true saying, “If you can’t get along with each other, I will not take you around anyone else.” If there is a problem in your home, close your home until
the problem is resolved.
The Flow of Water
There were two things that the priest used to purify the home after the mildew had been removed: water and blood. Water flows in our lives in many different ways. Water can take the form of tears, sweat, urine or saliva. Water is used in our blood and helps to keep
our body temperature cool. Without water we quickly become dehydrated and our body temperature begins to rise.
We all Need Salt
When we have a growth of sin (mildew) in our home it often causes a flow of tears by the injured party. Tears are a mixture of two things salt and water. If we lose too much salt from our bodies we become sick and cannot function properly. This is the same way it is with Christians. Jesus told us in Mark 9:50 that we should have salt within ourselves and have peace with one another. We can’t do this if we have sin (mildew) in our home.
The Cleansing Power of the Blood
Now we all know that without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins. Our house, our temple cannot be declared clean of this sin (mildew) unless the blood has been applied. This is why the priest in Leviticus 14 had to kill one of the birds and use its blood
to make the home ceremonially clean again. God instituted this practice of shedding blood when He killed the animals to cover the sins of Adam and Eve and it was finished with the death of Jesus.
Let the Water and the Blood Flow
When Jesus had yielded His life on the cross there came a flow of water and blood from His tortured body.
The flowing of water and blood. All who fall on their face under this flow are cleansed of the sin that so easily besets us. Is the salty water of tears flowing in your home today? Or is it the Living Water that flows from our Savior and the throne of God? Is the blood of
cleansing and forgiveness flowing to clean that sin (mildew) from your home and sweeten the aroma thereof with grace, mercy and true forgiveness? There can be no other way to
cleanse your temple and make it a suitable habitation for the Spirit of the Living God.
Use only Pure, Fresh Water
After the cleansing of the home and it is proven that the mildew (sin) is not coming back the rites of purification are begun. The purification uses fresh water. (Leviticus 14:48-52) This is not water that is left over from the day before or borrowed from someone else. This is water that the homeowner drew. Don’t rely on any other water than water you have drawn from The Source yourself.
A Return to Purity
The last part of the purification (Leviticus 14:53) is my favorite part. The priest releases the live bird. Once it has been proven that the sin is gone and your home clean and sweet, release that bird. The blood flowed and the sins were atoned for. The water flowed and the cleansing was complete. The fresh water was applied for the purification. Now release the bird outside and restore a normal life to your home. You have made it!
