Skullcap and Sleep
By: Mary E. Woodis
Skullcap is one of nature’s brain herbs. As the brain is the nerve center, Skullcap is an excellent herb to use where the nerves are involved. It is very quieting and soothing to people who are easily excited and thereby reduces anxiety and nervousness in cases of physical or emotional exhaustion. In my research I have found Skullcap often paired with Chamomile and Valerian. If you are having problems sleeping, a combination of these three herbs will become your best friend.
Chill Out!
Skullcap has a sedative effect on the nervous system; it helps to relax tight muscles and has been successfully used to relieve muscle spasms and menstrual cramps. By helping to relax a person physically and emotionally, Skullcap also helps to keep cholesterol low.
The Adrenaline Connection
One major cause for elevated cholesterol levels is the effect of stress on the body. When a person becomes excited, anxious, frightened or otherwise, the body releases adrenaline. Adrenaline thereby stimulates the bodies systems and the liver is overworked and begins to diminish its function. As an added plus, Skullcap also improves liver functions. In a similar fashion by reducing stress and muscle tension, Skullcap lowers the blood pressure as well. It is good for digestion and circulation.
Skullcap is not just for your nerves and to help you sleep. It also has been used to stop the development of certain viruses and makes uninfected cells more resistant to invasion
Hay Fever?
Do you suffer from Hay Fever? Skullcap can help you there also. Skullcap is an excellent choice to treat Hay Fever because it cuts down on the swelling and puffiness caused by allergies.
Pregnant or Nursing?
As with all herbs, I always check for side effects and the safety for children, nursing and pregnant mothers. Skullcap is safe for all these groups. If you are having problems with muscle pain in your pregnancy, Skullcap can help these muscles to relax. As the baby grows, it begins to put pressure on muscles and joints that are not used to carrying so much weight. This is where Skullcap comes in. It can’t relieve the problem, but it can help to alleviate some of the symptoms. I have found no harmful side effects listed with this herb.
Joint Problems?
Do you have problems with rheumatism, gout or neuritis? Skullcap has a diuretic property that draws out uric acid. This helps the nervous system in dealing with these problems.
